Use of Generative AI

The Lift and Escalator Symposium Educational Trust (LES) recognize responsible use of generative AI (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies in submitted papers. Authors preparing a paper can use AI Tools, but these tools must never be used as a substitute for critical thinking, expertise and evaluation.

LES policy is that Authors are fully responsible and accountable for the contents of their work submitted to the Symposium. They should be aware that GenAI can produce information that appears factual, convincing, and intelligent, but is often inaccurate and unreliable.

Therefore, Authors should be aware of the risks involved, and the following key issues should be considered when GenAI tools are deployed in submitted papers.

  • The use of any tools or sources, AI-based or otherwise, is made clear and transparent to readers, and a disclosure statement upon submission is required.

  • The accuracy, comprehensiveness, and objectivity of all AI-generated content should be critically appraised and verified (including checking the sources involved).

  • GenAI outputs should be verified against scientifically reliable information sources.

  • Privacy, data and copyright of any information and data submitted to train the GenAI tool should be protected.

  • The following should not be submitted to a GenAI tool: personal/confidential data; data belonging to other people or organizations, unless permission has been granted or is licensed.

  • GenAI Tools must not be listed or cited as an author or co-author on the paper.
