Dr. Adem CANDAŞ is an Assistant Professor at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from ITU in 2010, 2013, and 2021, respectively. His research interests include fracture mechanics, computer-aided engineering, numerical analysis, materials handling systems, and lift systems.
Among public buildings ordinarily used by the public, health facilities hold a critical priority and importance. During field visits in the last 15 years in Turkey following two major destructive earthquakes, damage to hospital elevators in particular has drawn attention. Hospital elevators, which are of great importance in the treatment of earthquake victims, are desired to be earthquake-resistant after an earthquake. In this study, the damages detected in hospital elevators following the 2011 Van earthquake and the 2023 Kahramanmaraş twin earthquakes were evaluated, and the techniques developed and implemented for earthquake-resistant elevators were explained with examples.
